Question: is a basic 'default' handstrike optional?

In combat my oponent had a card out that made me take any damage I dealt to him (blood of acid or something) and I was low on blood. We were at close range. Was I compelled to hit him for 1 damage (not having any strike cards in my hand). Common sense says I don't have to hit him but the rules can be read to say that I do. (which put me in torpor)

Yes. >Common sense says I don't have to hit him You're right, you (the player) don't have to hit him (the player). >but the rules can be read to >say that I do. (which put me in torpor) The minions in combat must strike unless they have a card that allows them to do otherwise. I'm sorry you were in torpor, usually only the vampire card will go to that region. Carpe noctem. Lasombra http://www.TheLasombra.com

I don't know...LSJ, can we get a ruling on this? "The default strike is a hand strike. If no other strike is chosen, then the hand strike is "chosen"." [LSJ 19981012] Since you haven't chosen another strike, you 'choose' the hand strike. "B must declare a strike." [LSJ 20020813] http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=3D59004C.2130D57E%40white-wolf.com From the rulebook: "During the strike phase, the minions strike each other (if possible) or make an effort to avoid being struck (by dodging, for example)." [6.4.3] Since you are not making an attempt to avoid being struck - by dodging, for example - you must strike the other minion. "Each minion chooses his strike. The strike can be from a combat card, from a weapon the minion possesses or (the default) from a hand strike." [6.4.3] You choose your strike. (This is not "may choose a strike" or "can choose a strike". You choose a strike.) Is the strike coming from a combat card? No, you have not played a combat card. Is the strike coming from a weapon? No, you have not played a weapon. So you choose the default hand strike. -- James Coupe PGP Key: 0x5D623D5D Lucky that my breasts are small and humble, EBD690ECD7A1FB457CA2 So you don't confuse them with mountains. 13D7E668C3695D623D5D

The player is not obliged to hit (and indeed, is prohibited from hitting) the other player. Of course. -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. Actually I did mean to ask about the vampire and my question appears to be answered. Is there a reason for not allowing an alternative cardless 'strike' of 'stand like a rock' ('sit like a pudding'?)? Notwithstanding the fact that it happened to my vampire it does seem pretty stupid for a vampire to have to hit someone he knows has acidic blood which will hurt him when he has no chance of crippling his opponent and needs his blood for preventing the damage from the opponent's strike... I suppose he (the vampire) didn't know about the acidic blood... arguably. Is there any other situation where standing still is better than taking a swing? Nothing springs to mind but I haven't even seen more than half the cards. Does any card give the blood of acid effect over more than one round?

Yes, you did, and yes, it was. The question above (following the "LOL") is about the players, however. It was asked by dancingmummy. :-) > Is there a reason for not allowing an alternative > cardless 'strike' of 'stand like a rock' ('sit like a pudding'?)? In play: yes - the rules. In the rules: yes - designer intent. If the minion is in combat, he must be combative by default. A cardless "stand there and take it" strike would be reasonable based on the backstory, but then again, so would a cardless dodge. The card game isn't designed to let that occur, however. [ quoted text not captured ] Many, many, many years ago, when the game first started, a group of us were playing a large (9-player) game late one night. The rules were not so clear on this issue then, which allowed for the following: Ryan bleeds, watches it get bounced three or four times ending up being blocked by John (not me, another one) far across the huge table from him. They quickly discuss how neither wants to hurt the other's vamp, so they ask if they can in fact decline to hand strike at all. The group looked through rules, talked about it, and decided that they didn't have to, much to some people's dismay. Ryan and John both looked very relieved. John: "So we don't have to strike each other, cool." Ryan: "Okay, then I don't strike at all. And you don't strike, and combat ends." John: "Actually, I'll go ahead and hit you for one, now that you've declared you don't strike. And since I do more damage than you, Pulled Fangs. Take an aggravated damage and go to torpor." (plays Amaranth) "Except you burn." Ryan: (slack-jawed in total shock) "......" Rest of table: (collapses in laughter at the totally unexpected, wholly gratuitous screw of Ryan) This pretty much guaranteed that we defaulted to 'you must strike for one as a default', explicit rule or no... -John Flournoy
