Hey, i know you're listening so here is some helpful info just in case someone
at wizards uk actually does have our last 9 months of second byte sanctioned
VTES tournaments results.
You can calculate the player ratings by going to the following site and just
filling in the boxes:
http://madnessnetwork.hexagon.net/madness_coord_rater.html
If there is a problem you can contact the great and good Scott Johnson,
vte...@wizards.com
He will help you to do hard stuff like 6-player finals, of which we have had
at least 1*.
You could also look up your company's new policy on sanctioning vampire
leagues, which was actually posted on this very NG by Robert Goudie, but it
originated with Jessica or Jennifer or somebody. Anyway, the thread is called
"New Leagues". i'm sure Jennifer, or failing that a handy accountant, will
confirm that it's VERY MUCH in your company's interests to sell cards, and
that an efficient way of doing this is the promotion of sealed deck events
which, for vampires at least, primarily is going to have to be leagues [cos
the games take a long time, see?]. I expect you could get AT LEAST a signed
photograph of Richard Garfield [if not actual promotion to the board and a
500% payrise] out of making the few phone-calls needed to get authorisation
for specific vampire leagues.
But FAR more importantly, in this way you will become the most popular
wizards employee in the UK, apart from Gideon [wizards uk telephone number is
0345 125 519, BTW], whom we all love anyway with a deep and abiding love.
Benefits of this treasured status include [a] an ENORMOUSLY increased chance
of getting to chat up cute goth girls [or boys, depending on gender and
preference], and [b] not having your legs bitten so much by VEKN princes fed
up of having to explain to their subjects why everyone else in the Vampire
world has a player rating except for them.
*You know, we are quite happy to do this stuff ourselves, for free, gratis.
And quite honestly, until we see evidence that you people are actually going
to do something with the results we send you, that is how it is going to be.
When people spend hundreds of pounds on cards and travel 100s of miles
[1000s, in david tatu's case] to participate in a tournament they have a
right to expect their achievements to be recorded, and as prince of wessex i
intend to make sure that happens.

Well said, brother prince. :)
In the german area (Germany, Austria) we have a similar situation, but now
things will move a bit, I suppose, 'cause AMIGO seems to be a bit more
interested in VTES, they have again cards in stock, and sanction events.

Alright James, i know you are a rabid V:TES fanatic and this post was at least
constructive enough to list the Madness Network site but making personnal and
abusive comments to Wizards UK staff with whom you have had a total of one phone
call's contact with it not the best way to approach the situation. Gideon is the
Customer services rep. notice- _not_ V:TES player support, rankings chacer of
resident psychic.
Your above post is probably the first time anyone at the office was aware of that
website or what it does. Why is this? well, the 2 princes don't contact the office
at all. AFAIK i have more contact with them than you guys do (yeah, i know my
situation is slightly different from the average player on account of having
worked there, but you get my point). you may well be a prince in title, but if you
don't organise tournaments, apply for prize support and do nothing but throw you
rattle out of your pram when you don't instantainiously get your way.
Gideon's line manager is Carl Crook the organiseed play manager for the UK who
approves all the prize support. He is out of the country at the moment at Pro-Tour
New York but will be back in the office on wednesday morning. His immediate
impression of you and your tactics will be bad. I am guessing there is a copy of
you last post needlessly slagging one of his staff in his mailbox by now. Not a
great move and not constructive, especially when he is the person who is most
likely to help you. Carl has the tourney reports on file. It is not Gideons job to
know where these are filed (office or warehouse) as frankly there are bigger
thiongs for Wizards CS at the moment not least of which the 6th ed magic rules.
Whilst we all love the game IT IS SMALL FRY COMPARED TO MAGIC more people play
magic, it is the flagship card game and CS time is adjusted accordingly. your
request will get done as soon as Carl is back and brought up to speed with what
your request entails.
Ine the US V:TES is a sanctionable Arena in-store-play tournament format. this is
NOT the case in the UK. This decision was made in the US, no one in the UK office
regardless of job description is to blame.
**constructive point- write to the Arena co-ordinator in the UK (Kieth Anderson,
or his manager Carl Crook) and tell them why you think this is a good idea.
Supportive player base shows interest and is likely to get the policy changed.
Abuse and trying to tell some one how to do their stressful (and note: underpaid
IMO) job is not.**
I would suggest that you have a more constructive relationship with the UK office,
as at least they supply prize support (which is incedently above the levels they
should do for a comparitive M:TG tournament), but that 20 people playing V:TES,
however dedicated, may not get an immediate response to requests.
I know the job I used to do it. Things like this are neither warrented or
necessary. As i said to to the other prince in a previous lifetime: "post
something constructive next time"
Sorry to shout James, i am sure you know it is out of character, please call the
office again with a level head. The situation it is not so bad, and i am sure you
will get copies of the result back to get ranked with. (copies obviously have to
kept to reconcile the prizes sent out). I know you are reading gid. Give James a
chance when he calls- he is usually level headed, but just gets a bit passionate
at times.
peace, love, later

Y'know, irony obviously doesn't come across on Usenet. i thought i was being
careful NOT to abuse ANYBODY - i was serious when i said that gideon is a fine
chap.

Indeed no. We don't organise tournaments, so it would be a waste of everyone's
time if we did.
AFAIK i have more contact with them than you guys do (yeah, i know my

You're right, of course, i am only a titular prince. On the other hand i am
good friends with the people who DO organise tournaments and with the people
who play in them. They are frustrated. i think it's my job to articulate that
frustration, the more so because i have no financial interest whatsoever in
the CCG business. Now, where did i put that dam' rattle?

Now THAT is what we needed to know. Thank you, Matt!

Yeah, terrible, aren't they?

Hehehe ... shout away, matey. i like a bit of a shout m'self. But i'm not
calling the office at all. Wizards need to deal directly with John Eagles [see
below].
The situation it is not so bad, and i am sure you

Ah, isn't he sweet. But the truth, as you all know, is that i am a complete

i'm a great believer in efficient management, and that involves a clear chain
of command. The person to whom the results should go is John Eagles, because
he is actually the chap who runs the majority of the VTES tournaments in the
uk. He deserves recognition for that, and to be treated fairly.
So the upshot of all this is that Carl just needs to send the results to john
when he has time, and then everything will be hunky-dory. In fact let's cut a
corner here:
Dear Carl,
John Eagles
Second Byte
70B Albert Rd
Southsea,
Portsmouth
would like a copy of the DCI-sanctioned VTES tournament results from your
files, please, so that we can figure out the player rankings. Matthew, you
know the right email addy to send this to, so please forward it. Thank you in
advance, kind wizards uk people!
i will do the calculations with LSJ's help and everyone will be happy as
sandboyz.

I would like a small, yet highly ostentacious shine decorated with the pudgey hands of
UK BattleTech players (both of them) at a site of your whim, perferably close to a
brewery (Murphy's for choice in this uncertrain world).

Point taken, but who's responsible for the input of tournament results the organiser or
the local prince? Robert? Scott? anyone?

The organiser should report the results to the DCI (and, if desired,
report the ratings to VEKN for compilation until the DCI assumes
that task).
The Prince, if not present at the tourney, should be given a report as
well, when possible.

The local prince is responsible for it, but the assumption behind that is
that the prince organises tournaments. In the uk that doesn't happen, and it
seems to me important that we recognise the reality of this in our management
arrangements. So i am still the chap to flame if your rating is wrong, but
the actual line of communication is: Carl and John deal with tournament
management. i am john's ratings calculator. i think this arrangement will
work out just fine.

Just to make sure there is no confusion here let me make a few points.
The DCI in the U.S. promised to again sanction V:TES (and provide player
ratings) right at the time V:EKN created its own rating system and was
about to roll it out. After approximately a year of waiting I
rolled-out our Official V:EKN ratings. One day, the DCI may provide a
rating system and if we like their system we will move to it. Until
then...
It is up to the individual event coordinators to calculate the ratings
and send the results to me.
