(question) cost of something

Howdy, I have two questions regarding cost of things. While the Path of Bones is in play, Baldesar Rossellini is equipping some kewl stuff which requires necromancy and costs 3 blood. If I use Baldesar's ability, the cost of the equipment is reduced by 1 blood. Can I play 'kewl stuff' with Baldesar even if he only has 2 blood? I think the answer is yes as long as I announce the usage of his special. Also, above argument has nothing to do with Path of Bones because the Path does not change the actual cost of the 'kewl stuff'. Baldesar, in effect, only pays 1 blood, but he cannot play the 'kewl stuff' when he only has 1 blood. Is this correct? regards,

No so such kewl stuff currently exists, but I'll go with you for the sake of argument. > If I use Baldesar's ability, the cost of the equipment is reduced by 1 > blood. However, the same also goes for alternate payment methods such as Ravnos Carnival. > Also, above argument has nothing to do with Path of Bones because the > Path does not change the actual cost of the 'kewl stuff'. Baldesar, > in effect, only pays 1 blood, but he cannot play the 'kewl stuff' when > he only has 1 blood. Is this correct? Path of Bone does reduce cost. It just has bad wording from its printing in Final Nights. The text should be parallel to the most recent printings of the Sabbat paths in 3rd Edition. Jesse

That is not exactly correct. Baldesar's ability only kicks in when the cost is being paid, not when the action is declared. So you can (must?) wait to see if your equip action is successful before declaring the use of his ability. Here's the thread where I asked LSJ that exact question: http://tinyurl.com/yswx2s That said, you're right that you could still take the action with only 2 blood. I'm pretty sure if Path of Bone is in play, could take the action with only 1 blood. Ira

[ quoted text not captured ] You need to be able to meet the cost requirements of a card when you announce the action, and this includes any method of reducing/paying for the cost that's on the table - such as Fatuus Mastery, Sunset Strip, Hollywood, or Powerbase:Tswane - but you do need to announce such use (and tap the cards where necessary). Check LSJ's comments on a similar example with Sunset Strip here: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/msg/0d864a349c3a8dcd So you'd need to announce the use of Baldesar's ability when you start the action (IF you need it to afford the cost) - you won't be able to wait until resolution (in case the action fails) and then announce using his ability in this situation. Also note, if you play modifiers that cause you to no longer be able to pay the cost, then the action fizzles (if it reaches resolution without being blocked) and as much of the cost as the minion can must be paid.

Baldesar can be used to reduce the cost up front (such as in the case where it is necessary to make the action playable), but also when the cost is being paid - at least, from my understanding of LSJ's rulings. Maybe LSJ should chip in at this point, because the two examples of quoted text could be seen to contradict each other, perhaps a clarification is in order?

[ quoted text not captured ] The link Ira gave has the clarification (I'd call it a ruling, though). Baldesar's ability is used when the cost is paid.

[ quoted text not captured ] Reading all the replies (thx everyone!), I guess I have the following. Baldesar only have 1 blood, but he announces to equip with the kewl stuff anyway. I am not specifying the usage of his special yet. Nobody blocks. At resolution, I will choose to use his special together with the reduction from the Path, burning only 1 blood. So, Baldesar can play cards which have exceeding blood cost as long as I know that he is paying less blood in effect. Hmmm, okies.
