The Darned Rulebook!

Ok, maybe we're missing something, maybe we're all very stupid... But... I group of us decided to start card game playing to give us time to take a break from our usual RPG'ing. We've decided to start with Jyhad (though we have Magic and Illuminati and the Star Trek games too), anyway, starting with Jyhad, we've all read the little booklet and the "Eternal Struggle" rulebook, and still we have one pressing question... WHERE THE HECK ARE THE RULES TO PLAY?!?! Who wrote this book, and why isn't he in jail!?!? There's plenty of cute little background story info, intersperced with vague (if not totally worthless) information about how the game would be played IF we already knew how it was played. But, seeing as how we don't, where the HECK are the rules on HOW TO PLAY. We don't want or need any background storys, historys of certain vampires or clans, etc etc... Just, how does the game work? Often the manual says to look to the card for an explanation (Huh?) Maybe if the cards contained more information and less stupid quotes from songs or poems or whatever, that might be a reasonable alternative, but, it doesn't work that way. There are 5 of us, and we have ALL hit the same brick walls. We've checked around our area, and nobody we know knows how the game is played. A few friends bought started decks and some booster packs, hoping, as we did, to learn the game and play, but they too say they have no clue. So how the heck did anyone here get started? Did you all have someone to teach you? Did ANYONE learn how to play from reading the so called rulebooks? We're baffled! And from reading through the instructions for the other 3 card games, it appears they're similarly confusing and poorly documented. I sunk over $250 into these games collectivly, hoping to add a new dimension to our gaming world, I feel a bit ripped off. Can anyone PLEASE help to clarify the situation? Send me E-Mail with some kind of siplified documentation on how the game is played? What cards mean what, etc? Any help would be appreciated, Mike P.S. This goes for the other 3 games too. :) -- +-------------------+ +-------------------------------+ | msm...@netaxs.com | | http://www.netaxs.com/~msmith | +-------------------+----------------+-------------------------------+ | "An it harm none do as thou wilt" - Wiccan Rede | +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ | CyberGraF/X Design Studios: Custom Graphics Design. Complete Rules' Outline has been forwarded to your location. It (and the Card Errata Sheet and a list of various House Rules) will appear on this newsgroup on the 1st and 16th of every month, and following any DTRs and FAQs. Thanks for putting up with the game despite the rules. -- L. Scott Johnson (sjoh...@math.scarolina.edu) Graphics Specialist and Jyhad Rulemonger.

The short and quick answer is No! No one I've ever met learned how to play from the first rule books, neither the tradepapaer back nor the little throwaway brochure in the starter box. Thankfully, the rules sent on to you should work.

That's why I got the (officially wrong, thanks DTR) wrong ideas that (D) bleeds are restricted to your prey, and that playing a strike is optional. >We're baffled! Good for you. /Only/ $250 before you begin feeling ripped off. Ther are people who sank 40 times that amount into CCG's before finally getting the point. CCG's are inherently big $$$ investments. Why they can get such sales despite horrible rules editing, ect. is beyond my grasp. Perhaps most (there are obvious exclusions, such as jyhad.net.personality) CCG players are (flame-proof suit on) of the kind that can't sit down and read the rules of a game, so the badly-written rules don't matter. I'm not talking about you, no offense, since you obviously indicated that you did read the rules and get (rightfully) confused. >Can anyone PLEASE >help to clarify the situation? Send me E-Mail with some kind of siplified >documentation on how the game is played? What cards mean what, etc? I saw that Scott did that already. Thanks, Scott. Did you include my second long article (IMO the most important for someone just `trying' CCG's `for a break')? -- "Live Life with Heart." Alan Kwan kw...@cs.cornell.edu

If you contact Customer Service at cust...@wizards.com, you should be able to get a copy of the corrected Jyhad rulebook, which still isn't ideal, but which is better than the one that got included in the starters. No, we aren't particularly happy about that rulebook. The rules are being given a complete overhaul for Vampire: the Eternal Struggle. While the rulebook sucks, we got a lot of help from other players on this newsgroups and the numerous FAQ's. Rez
