The second paragraph is referring to the Paths of Bones and Paradox. Sorry for not being clear. [ quoted text not captured ]

And it's not like they are cards you want to stock your whole deck with? Who cares if they are rare. People that don't play the clans will have extras, and get rid of them. And if you have 1-2, you are set. I'm actually glad to see that the good cards in this set are common! Only the funky wierd cards, that either you aren't going to use, or need alot of are rare. (see ancient influence-if that card were rare, and freak drive were common things would be alot more balanced in the basic set)

And these cards can only be played once per game (which IMO is much more restrictive than just being "unique."). To be honest, I was originally in the school of thought that unique and esp. "once per game" cards should be generally rarer (and I mean "generally) since otherwise you have an insanely large pile of cards you can't really use. In fact, I was quite annoyed the Festivo was made into an uncommon in SW since it would mean large piles of it. But since the precedence has already been set, I don't see why the Bone and Paradox Paths couldn't at least have been uncommon? Halcyan 2

Other than languishing in only seeing one of the cards in 3 booster boxes (random chance, I know) is that, IMHO Paradox and Bones should have filled an uncommon slot in the starters of their respective clans, even if still a rare in the boosters. Then the card wouldn't clog up the boosters and have been readily available to someone playing the appropriate clan. I recognize that this is just nitpicking, and I'm sorry to just vent, all in all I'm really liking the Set (laughs at own pun). [note, cameron was immediatly ejected from humanity for that] But hey, if you can't rant a little now and then what good is the newsgroup. Cameron PS, having just watched the new Dune movie on SciFi, umm, Settite card: Sand Worm unique ally - FoS 5 life 0 strength 0 bleed vampires in combat with Sand Worm are burned at the end of combat sand worm only untaps if you burn one of the vampires you control in your untap Cost: no idea.

Well, how about that crappy gangrel chick? We could make her ultra rare, and changed her out for one of the paths! Even better, drop her all together and put in something worth playing. She could be a promo, only released in Martha Stewert Magazine?

Cameron, we discussed this last night... the Fremen in that movie looked exactly what I thought the Assamites should look like. *They even have that spitting thing* =) If anyone gets sandworms it's the Assamites. Although I must admit that riding into combat on sandworms really don't fit the theme of stealthly assassins... PS. The actress that played Chani was Barbara Kodetova.

I think the biggest problem with uncommon vampires is that when you buy lots of FN cards (more than one booster display), you get about 4 of each uncommon vampires. But usually you only need 2 or 3 copies of same vampire. With Sabbat set I opened booster and found another Horrid Form (uncommon) and thought "Gee, this is my 15th Horrid Form but I can use them all.." :) - Guzmo

I'd be happy to pay for shipping . . . ) Alternately, trade the surplus for Fidai and Aabbt.

The Paths should have been included in the Preconstruced Starters. And Aaron, Ramona is fine. Go pick on the sucky large Assamites instead.. Bernie

David Cherryholmes

If you mean they suck simply because they're large, I'll leave you to your opinion. But several large Assmites have fortitude, making them freakable along with assorted other goodies, and (I think) five have auspex. Combine that with the newly-amped quietus and I think they're solid. I've been trying to make them go for a couple of weeks and, I'll admit, ousting hasn't been easy, but I haven't bothered to do a focussed rush deck with them, either, which is *probably* their best chance at garnering VPs. As an aside, my other post of an Assimite deck today was from memory and, now that I'm home, I realize is a little off (has a few wakes, a few less strikes), but mostly correct. Nah, don't get me wrong.. As my playgroup will attest, I have a fondness for playing Assamites but thought they could have been a bit better. Tell me how great Tariq is, after he's been stolen by Puppeteers or Temptations and starts to diablarize your minions.. Husamettin, his special is only good if you're doing something toolboxy. Has solid disciplines. Would rather have had his special on a 5-cap with minor qui, cel, obf. Ur Shulgi? It's nice that he can put Tajdid into play I suppose, but would have been better if he could put Contract counters on Vampires in play (wouldn't that have been cool). The big guys might not be so bad to play now that we have Zillah's Valley to get them out quick. Now that Origins is over, I need to get up to speed with Final Nights..

I got my first sweep with my AUS/FOR/CEL/QUI deck last night. It wouldn't've mattered much where I sat that game, but it mattered a lot that two decks were bruise-bleed and the other was weenie-potence. I think the Assamites main strength lies in fighting other combat decks. I don't think they necessarily cream non-combat decks the way POT/* does, but their combat style defeats most others (not ALL, of course, but most). Especially if you're using the FOR guys. > Tell me how great Tariq is, after he's been stolen by Puppeteers or Temptations > and starts to diablarize your minions.. Currently I *use* his AUS. Spirit's Touch goes nicely with all those Quietus range-only strikes. And he can deflect, albeit not too often unless you're putting blood back on him (which, of course, you are). And he freaks, so rush, untap to block. Or rush, untap and, I dunno, *diablerize*? > Husamettin, his special is only good if you're doing something toolboxy. Has > solid disciplines. Would rather have had his special on a 5-cap with minor > qui, cel, obf. He's one of five assassins with presence, though. I haven't built a deck around this yet, but since my other favorite, Tegyrius (AUS CEL FOR QUI pre), is in that club I may soon. > Ur Shulgi? Not charmed by him, either. > The big guys might not be so bad to play now that we have Zillah's Valley to > get them out quick. I play with lots. But the greatest flaw I've noticed in my assasin decks is the horrendous rate at which they spend pool to get those guys out. I think a very viable rush deck could be done with the smaller guys, which would alleviate that problem. > Now that Origins is over, I need to get up to speed with Final Nights.. I'm loving it. The two people in my playgroup who imagine themselves the most competitive both agree that all the independent clans suck. One can't play a game without twice as many minions as everyone else and the other won't build a deck without his block of 5th/2nd/MT, so I can see how the independents don't appeal to them. Statements like that just motivate me all the more to work it, work it, work it BABY! David Cherryholmes

I'll agree there to a point... but I also think you have the best chance against the Assamites if you decide to fight back. Depends on your metagame and how you build the deck, I think. If you build the Assamite deck to flash-fry other combat decks, and figure that you're just going to be hosed by S:CE, then they really are starting to be a combat trump. If you build the Assamite deck to hose NON-fight back decks, then you can do that too - but now you're vulnerable to other combat, and might be rudely surprised. But at least now they have a good crypt to manage this stuff with. >> Tell me how great Tariq is, after he's been stolen by Puppeteers or Temptations >> and starts to diablarize your minions.. > >Currently I *use* his AUS. It causes me severe physical pain to have to sit next to him. =/ Oh, and as an idle note: Card text on Puppeteer: "Ally with 1 life, 1 strength, 0 bleed. [nec] The puppeteer can give you control of an ally or a vampire with capacity less than 5 for the remainder of your turn as a (D) action. [NEC] As above, with 2 life." I don't see anything in there about untapping the ally or vampire, so as long as you make sure Tariq is taking actions (tricky, I know), you don't have to worry about THAT anymore. >I'm loving it. David, if you want to make a point with these guys have them look at the tourney report for Origins when it gets posted. I did pretty well, and none of my decks contained MT/5th/or 2nd Traditions. Anyone that says the independent clans suck, is going to have their arse handed to them at GenCon. Setites: Obfuscate & Presence is nasty in and of itself. The new Serpentis cards really give these guys an edge. Assamites: Takes a lot of work, but ya won't see them coming until all your vamps are contracted and torped. Ravnos: Decks relying on stealth are in big trouble as the Ravnos can easily reduce an acting minions stealth to Zero. Not to mention thier solid disciplines, and cost fixes to reprinted cards. Giovanni: Probably the strongest clan emerging from Final Nights with potential for huge bleed, Strong allies (Puppeteer, etc..), Major Bruise, very-very versatile. True, but true of most combat decks. The particular deck I'm playing now *really* wants to be at long. You obviously know combat well enough to know what that does and does not shut down. I'll trade shots with other long guys if I have to and count on 3 unpreventable or 2 agg plus additionals to come out on top. Up close it's not quite as good, but it has seemed pretty consistent that, after running through a couple of combats at long I've got a few of the 10 or so cards that are for the up close guys, probably Thin Blood, Disease, and Skin of Steel or Superior Mettle. Not where I really want to be, but I've got a good shot at popping for four and taking nothing. Maybe pull a Pursuit after range has been set, and there's the Bow and the Bang floating around in there, too. Lastly, most of my damage can't be prevented, which is a huge edge to have. Anyway, I'm in NO WAY saying that this is the "bestest combat deck ever!(TM)." For one, there's not enough fortitude to stand up to a serious sewer lid or gun deck. But, hey, we all gots our soft spots. > Depends on your metagame and how you build the deck, I think. Well, I knew for a fact that the S:CE guys were just going to laugh at this one; my goal was to screw with the fortitude that's become ubiquitous lately. Hosing other combat decks really well is an unforseen benny. > Tariq is a very bad man. It causes me severe physical pain to have to > sit next to him. =/ Oh, and as an idle note: I like him, too. I almost wish he didn't have superior everything except cel. He might then have a shot at diablerizing his way back up to a decent capacity. David

Sort of requires you to use a lot better blood management (you have to be able to soak a probable 2-3 at range and still have enough to Blur), but you can still MANAGE to come out on top. Whereas an awful lot of combat decks just dissolve if you start hitting back at long range (Carrion Crows/Aid from Bats doesn't really want to be hit at all, for example). >it has seemed pretty consistent that, after running through a couple of >combats at long I've got a few of the 10 or so cards that are for the up >close guys, probably Thin Blood, Disease, and Skin of Steel or Superior >Mettle. After all your minions have inferior Dominate, they can bleed-for-1 and Condition it, or beat hell out of someone if they block. =) If you get excess Dominate skill cards early, just toss 'em in the ash heap, as Tariq can go back and get them later while he's munching things. Everyone in our group (except the 2nd/5th/MT guy and one other guy who only bums decks off friends) madly switches decks between games in hopes of fixing what went horribly wrong last game. One of our buddies sometimes looks at the clock to decide whether his Malk S/B is required if he is short on time. > Some are just hung on > one particular game mechanic. Just about all of us seem to have at least 3 that are all but good to go at any time (I hear Garrett madly moving his PBase Montreal between decks). I have 9, pondering my 10th, with several of them being ugly stepchildren that don't get the best toys (Direct Intervention, Ivory Bow, Dreams, and Giant's Blood start to get really scarce after deck 3 or 4). - Jason Bell
