if a vamp i control dodges a strike by a minion with a ghoul retainer...i still take the 1 hand damage from the retainer if combat was at close range right? what about strike combat ends...do i take the damage from the retainer...does the ghoul work like wolf companion in that he does his damage during strike resolution?

Yes. It's just damage done, in the V:TES version. Even were it to be "for hands" (as Jyhad), Dodge only protects you from the opposing minion, not their retainers. >what about strike combat ends...do i take the damage from the retainer No. Strike Resolution goes: -Strike: Combat Ends (combat ends now) -Strike: Dodge (so both First Strike and Normal Strike are dodged) -First Strike -Normal Strike <------------- Retainer damage "during strike resolution" goes here >...does >the ghoul work like wolf companion in that he does his damage during strike >resolution? Yes. And it's done at the same time as non-S:CE, non-Dodge, non-First Strike strikes. -- James Coupe | PGP Key 0x5D623D5D | ja...@zephyr.org.uk (New e-mail) "Who'd have ever predicted the moment would come when I find myself grateful they've kept women dumb? Ghoul Retainers don't/can't "strike" - they just inflict damage. Dodge only protects from the opposing minion's strike, so won't protect against damage inflicted by the opposing minion's retainers. > what about strike combat ends...do i take the damage from the retainer...does > the ghoul work like wolf companion in that he does his damage during strike > resolution? So this also means that Skin of Steel and rolling with the punches (sup) won't prevent Ghoul retainer damage (as well as all cards that prevent "strike" damage)? Wow, and ouch. Best - Chris [ quoted text not captured ] -- chris ultimate disc - V:TES - hockey v:ekn prince of torrance, ca

Wow, and ouch. Yes. You need to use things like Skin of Rock. It's a useful way to hurt people who rely too much on Skin of Steel, and similar. Wolf Companion etc. work the same However, most people have found it very, very difficult to abuse retainers of the sort of Ghoul Retainer - even with lots of them and Flamethrowers etc. [ quoted text not captured ]

This might be an odd question but, When a vampire gets additional strikes there are multiple strike resolutions. Therefore the Ghoul Retainer would do damage multiple times. So Black Cat has two saturday night specials and a Ghoul retainer Equipped. She gets her first strike and it is resolved, so the ghoul retainer does damage. She Blurs, for two additional Strikes, the strikes are resolved and each time, during strike resolution the Ghoul retainer deals its saturday night special damage. Is this legal? as in 6.4.3 under additional strikes: "Additional Strikes. Some cards and effects allow a minion to make additional strikes during the current round of combat. Additional strikes are announced (gained) and performed (used) only after the first pair of strikes are completed. The acting minion decides whether or not to gain additional strikes before the opposing minion, as usual. Additional strikes are handled by having another choose strike phase and resolve strike phase in which only the minions with additional strikes may play strike cards. All additional strikes take place at the same range. This is repeated as necessary. A minion cannot use more than one card or effect to gain additional strikes per round of combat. This would be the part that is wrong. All retainers follow the rulings given for Wolf Companion cited here: "Wolf Companion - Retainer (ani) (1) The damage is not a strike, so cannot be prevented by a dodge. [RTR 19941109] The damage is done during normal damage dealing, so a Combat Ends will stop it, as will sending its controller to torpor during first strike. [RTR 19941109] Only does damage at close range. [RTR 19941109] Does not gain any additional strikes of its controller. [RTR 19941109] As with any retainer, the number of lives is set when it is recruited, and will not change if its controller's level of Animalism changes. [RTR 19941109] " The most important one being the next to last one in this case. > Is this legal? No. See: http://www.white-wolf.com/VTES/rulings.html Carpe Noctem. In article <8op49d$fhp$1...@nnrp1.deja.com>, [ quoted text not captured ] That is probably the best way to play it, however the Ghoul Retainer and the Wolf Companion do not have Strikes per se. as it says on the first notation. They only do damage durng strike resolution, it is silly however to think of a wolf suddenly being able to hit three times because its master does. So Legal sense and common sense diverge on this issue. So Legal sense and common sense diverge on >this issue. Ghoul Retainer card text: "2 life. Ghoul can use hands for 1 damage, or a weapon of the employing minion that the minion is not presently using, each round of combat." Retainers such as Ghoul/Wolf/Murder of Crows only apply their damage once per round, not once per strike resolution step. Although the minion employing the retainer may gain additional strikes, the Ghoul's damage is not a strike itself, and is not affected by additional strike resolutions. So, by card text, the Ghoul may use hands (once), or a weapon that the minion is not using (once), each round. legal sense and common sense are a lot closer than it appears. =) -- Derek Jack-Booted Thug of Atlanta
