Well, you can't use the action associated with Vast
Wealth and then decide you don't want the equipment.
If you use VW, you *must* pay the cost, even if you
can't afford the cost in pool. If you can't afford
the next piece, you are ousted. Who says money can
buy anything?

A: That is not an option.
Similarily - the acting minion cannot choose not to equip with the equipment
drawn after a successful Vast Wealth-induced action. If the equipment
costs enough to oust his Methuselah, then his Methuselah is ousted.
You only get options described on the card or in the rulebook.
